Skrea strand

Skrea strand is what happens when a beach sits inside a town rather than at the end of a drive. The sand begins where Falkenberg's streets run out, and the whole stretch functions as the town's outdoor living room: joggers on the promenade in the morning, families on the sand by early afternoon, and a steady trickle of people who just came for a swim before dinner. It is not trying to be Tylösand. There is no resort scene, no surf shops, no queue of touring cyclists — just a working town beach that happens to be genuinely good.

The single feature everyone mentions is the bathing pier. It runs well out past the shoreline on wooden piles, wide enough for two-way foot traffic, and ends in a diving platform that draws a constant rotation of teenagers testing their nerve. Older visitors use the pier for its original purpose: walking out over water too shallow to swim in yet, then lowering themselves off steps into deeper water without ever touching the sand-and-seaweed shallows. For anyone who dislikes wading through the first uncertain metres of a Swedish beach, this is the appeal in one sentence.

The sand and the swimming

The beach itself is flat, pale sand backed by low dunes and a boardwalk rather than a cliff or a headland — open coast, facing the Kattegatt without much shelter, so a stiff onshore wind will put a chop on the water that a more enclosed bay wouldn't get. On calm days it is exactly the gently shelving swim Halland is known for: safe wading for small children near the pier, open water further along for anyone who wants a proper swim rather than a paddle. The sand runs both north and south of the pier for a good distance, so the crowd thins fast if you're willing to walk a few hundred metres from the main access point.

Because it's a town beach rather than a wilderness one, expect company on a warm July afternoon — this is where Falkenberg goes swimming, not a quiet cove. For bathing-water quality on a given day, check the municipality's testing results or Visit Falkenberg rather than take last summer's word for it.

Facilities

This is one of the best-equipped beaches in the guide simply because it's attached to a town. The promenade behind the sand carries showers, changing huts, a playground and several kiosks and cafés that stay open through the summer season. The pier itself is wheelchair- and pushchair-accessible, which is unusual for a Halland bathing jetty and worth knowing if mobility is a factor. Lifeguard cover follows the usual Swedish pattern — present on the busiest stretch through the core summer weeks, absent outside it — so treat any given day on its own merits rather than assuming supervision.

Just inland, Klitterbadet gives Skrea strand a fallback that most beaches on this coast don't have: an indoor and outdoor pool complex with slides and a sauna, useful on a windy day or for anyone who wants heated water rather than the Kattegatt's. It turns Skrea strand into an all-weather stop rather than a fair-weather-only one.

Getting there and parking

Skrea strand is close enough to central Falkenberg to walk or cycle from a hotel or the railway station in well under half an hour, and it sits directly on the Kattegattleden cycle route, so touring cyclists pass straight through it without a detour. Drivers will find several car parks strung along the road that runs behind the dunes, busiest closest to the pier and progressively quieter the further north or south you park. In peak summer, arriving before late morning or after the afternoon rush makes a real difference to how easily you find a space.
