Frillesås

Frillesås doesn't offer one continuous beach so much as a scatter of small ones, tucked between low rocky outcrops along the coast north of Träslövsläge. The pattern repeats along much of this shoreline: a patch of sand a hundred metres or two long, then a shoulder of pale, wave-smoothed rock, then another small bay. Locals tend to have a favourite pocket rather than treating it as one beach, and part of the pleasure of Frillesås is simply walking the shore and picking whichever bay looks least busy that day.

Like the rest of the coast between Varberg and Kungsbacka, Frillesås sits on sheltered, shallower water than the long open strands further south — the bays here don't take the full force of the Kattegatt the way Skrea strand or Apelviken do, so conditions tend to be calmer and the water a touch warmer in early summer. It's a landscape better suited to slow exploring by bike or on foot than to arriving, parking once, and staying put all day.

The bays and the swimming

Each individual bay is modest — this is not a beach to bring a wide beach set-up expecting acres of open sand — but the smooth granite between them is as much a feature as the sand itself, warm underfoot and easy to sunbathe on directly. Swimming is generally calm and shallow close to shore, deepening gradually enough for children to wade comfortably, with the rock providing easy, gradual entry points into the water in spots where sand runs out. Because the coastline is broken rather than continuous, wind shelter varies bay to bay; if one pocket feels exposed, another just along the shore usually won't.

This variety is the real selling point over a single long strand: families can find a sheltered corner for young children while others in the group swim from rock a short walk away. It rewards a little exploring rather than settling on the first bay you reach.

Facilities

Facilities are basic and spread thin across the various bays rather than concentrated at one main entrance — expect a car park or two, a scattering of showers or changing huts near the more popular pockets, and perhaps a seasonal kiosk close to the busiest bay rather than a full promenade of them. This suits Frillesås's character: it's a place for a picnic packed from home and a long afternoon moving between bays, not a beach with a boardwalk and a row of cafés.

Getting there and parking

Frillesås lies just off the coast road between Kungsbacka and Varberg, with the village itself a short distance inland and several signposted lanes running down to the various bays. Parking is small-scale and local — a handful of spaces at each access point rather than one large lot — so on a warm weekend it can be worth trying a second bay if the first one's car park is full rather than waiting. A car is genuinely useful here, since the bays are spread along several kilometres of coast rather than clustered around one entrance.
