Surfing at Apelviken

Apelviken has been Sweden's home of surfing for decades, and it looks the part before you've even touched the water: a wide sandy bay backed by beach cafés and a surf-camp scene that's grown up around a wave most other countries would call modest. That's the honest pitch for it — this is small, forgiving, learner-friendly surf rather than a serious wave destination, and it's exactly that quality that has made it the place Swedes go to try surfing for the first time.

The bay faces south-west into the Kattegatt, picking up wind-driven swell rather than long-period ocean groundswell, which means conditions are wind-dependent and change quickly. It's also shallow and sandy-bottomed, about as safe a learning environment as beach surf gets, and the reason schools have operated here for so long.

Apelviken itself, a short way south of Varberg, is the centre of it: the beach break sits directly in front of the surf clubhouse and café strip, easy to reach and easy to watch from the sand if you're not in the water yet. It's also Halland's main kitesurf spot, so on windy days the bay splits informally between surfers working the whitewater closer in and kiters further out — worth being aware of before paddling out on a gusty afternoon.

For surfers wanting a change of scene, the open beaches further south around Skrea strand and Glommen occasionally pick up a similar wind swell, though without Apelviken's schools, rental huts or reliable crowd of other surfers to read the conditions off.

Counterintuitively, autumn and winter are Apelviken's real surf season: low pressure systems crossing the North Sea and Kattegatt push in the wind swell that the bay depends on, so October through March sees the most consistent, rideable waves, even if the air and water are cold enough that only a wetsuit makes it comfortable. Summer can be flat for days at a time, though onshore blows during a westerly spell still produce a rideable bay wave, and the water is at its warmest and the café scene at its busiest, so plenty of people surf then regardless of wave quality. A wetsuit — full 4/3mm or thicker in winter, boots and gloves for the coldest months — is standard gear here year round, not an optional extra.

Board and wetsuit hire is available right at the bay, along with lesson packages aimed squarely at first-timers, run by the surf school operators based at Apelviken — Surfers Paradise has long been the established local outfit here. Beginners are usually put on a foam longboard, which suits the gentle, forgiving nature of the break far better than a shortboard would. Anyone bringing their own board should still plan on a local wetsuit given how quickly the Kattegatt cools relative to how it looks on a sunny day.

This is a genuinely beginner-friendly wave — sandy bottom, gentle whitewater, shallow enough close to shore that a first lesson rarely involves anything scarier than falling off in waist-deep water. More experienced surfers will find the bay unglamorous on an average day and worth chasing only when a proper autumn low pushes swell in. The main safety point is sharing the bay with kitesurfers and the occasional strong rip near the harbour wall on bigger days; a lesson or a chat with the school on the day is the easiest way to get a current read on where to sit.

A first lesson at Apelviken pairs naturally with a stay in Varberg — walk or cycle down to the bay, surf in the morning while the wind is usually lighter, and spend the afternoon at Varberg Fortress or the kallbadhus.
