Airports

Halland doesn't have a major airport of its own, and in practice that's not much of an inconvenience, because two large international airports sit close to either end of the county and connect to it by direct train. Which one to fly into depends mainly on where in Halland you're headed: Landvetter for Kungsbacka, Åsa and Varberg in the north, Kastrup for Halmstad and Laholm in the south. Falkenberg, roughly in the middle, works reasonably well from either.

Landvetter is Sweden's second-busiest airport, around half an hour east of Gothenburg by road, with a good spread of European routes. There's no train station at the airport itself — the connection is the Flygbussarna airport bus into Gothenburg Central Station, where you change onto a Västkustbanan train heading south. It's a reliable but multi-step journey: bus to the city, then a wait for the connecting train, then the ride itself. Budget the better part of a morning or afternoon door to door if you're heading as far as Halmstad, less if you're only going to Kungsbacka or Varberg. Car hire is available at the terminal if you'd rather drive straight down the E6 and skip the train change entirely.

Kastrup has a railway station built directly under the terminal, which makes it unusually convenient for reaching southern Halland. Öresundståg and SJ trains run north from the station without a change, crossing the Öresund bridge, calling at Malmö and Helsingborg, and continuing up the Västkustbanan into Halmstad and beyond. It's a genuine one-seat ride from the arrivals hall to a Halland platform, and for many travellers heading to Halmstad or Laholm it works out simpler and faster overall than flying into Gothenburg, even though Kastrup is in a different country. Kastrup also has a much larger global route network than Landvetter, so it's often the airport with the better long-haul connection in the first place.

Halmstad has its own small airport a short taxi ride from the town centre, but scheduled passenger traffic is thin compared with the two international hubs and can vary from season to season. It's not a realistic first choice for most international visitors, but if you're already connecting through another Swedish domestic airport, it's worth checking current routes directly with the airport rather than assuming a particular flight exists. For everyone else, Landvetter or Kastrup, followed by the train, is the more dependable plan.

As a rule of thumb: if your final stop is Kungsbacka, Åsa or Varberg, Landvetter plus the train south is usually quickest. If it's Halmstad or Laholm, Kastrup plus the train north is usually quickest, and it also opens up flight options through Denmark that may not exist through Gothenburg. Falkenberg sits close to the middle of the line, so either airport works about equally well — in that case, compare flight prices and schedules rather than assuming one route is inherently faster. It's also worth thinking about the return leg, not just the arrival. If you're flying home from Copenhagen after a stay in the south of the county, you get the same direct train in reverse, which means a Halmstad or Laholm base can be genuinely simpler to leave than to arrive at, since you're not fighting rush-hour traffic on a motorway to make a flight. Leaving from Landvetter after a stay further north works the same way in reverse, with the Flygbussarna connection running from central Gothenburg on a schedule generally timed around flight departures rather than the other way round — build in the bus and any wait at the airport rather than cutting the connection close.
