Ätran

Landscape and wildlife

The Ätran rises in the highlands of southern Västergötland and Småland and runs a long, winding course down through Ullared and out to the coast at Falkenberg, where it splits the old town in two and finishes in a harbour mouth flanked by the town's fish market and smokehouses. In town the river runs over a series of low rapids and weirs right in the centre — a strange and pleasant sight, whitewater a few steps from the high street — before slowing into the tidal harbour stretch.

What makes the Ätran unusual among Halland's rivers is its salmon: unlike most Swedish west-coast rivers, which rely on stocked or hatchery-supported runs, the Ätran holds a genuinely wild, self-sustaining Atlantic salmon population, considered one of the most important wild salmon rivers left on Sweden's Kattegatt coast. Sea trout share the run, and grayling and native brown trout hold in the calmer upper reaches. The river corridor through and around Falkenberg supports herons, cormorants and the usual harbour gulls, with quieter stretches upstream giving better cover for otters, which have returned to several of Halland's rivers in recent decades. The wild status of the Ätran's salmon is treated as a conservation priority in its own right, and the run here is watched closely as an indicator of how the whole west-coast salmon population is doing, since a self-sustaining wild stock is a much rarer thing on this coast than a supported one.

Trails and access along the water

Falkenberg's town-centre riverside paths run along both banks past the rapids, the old town and the harbour, an easy and rewarding walk that takes in bridges, the fish market and views straight down onto the salmon holding in the pools below the weirs — in season it's one of the better places in Sweden to watch wild salmon from dry land without any special access. Paths continue less formally upstream and downstream of the centre for those who want a longer walk, and the harbour end of the walk doubles as a good spot to see the fishing boats and smokehouses that still work the river mouth.

Best season

Salmon and sea trout run from early summer through autumn, with the town-centre rapids giving good sightings of fish holding or working upstream over the weirs well into the season. Autumn spawning brings fish into the clearest, most visible water of the year on the shallower stretches above town. The harbour and lower river are pleasant for a walk in any season, since the rapids and weir views don't depend on the fish being visible. Winter and early spring bring the highest water of the year over the weirs, a dramatic sight even with no fish running.

Access and parking

Falkenberg's centre sits directly on the river with parking throughout the old town and short walks to any viewpoint on the rapids. Because the Ätran's wild salmon stock is considered nationally important, fishing is more tightly regulated here than on some of Halland's other rivers — always check current rules before bringing a rod.
