Unnaryd

Unnaryd sits at the eastern edge of Halland, in Hylte municipality, where the county's forests run up against the shore of Lake Bolmen — a large lake that belongs mostly to neighbouring Kronoberg county but reaches into Halland at this one point. It's a genuinely remote corner of the county by Halland standards: no sea, no motorway, just forest, farmland and water for as far as the road takes you.

The village itself is small and unhurried, built around the lakeshore and a handful of streets, and it draws far fewer visitors than Halland's coastal towns — most who make the trip come specifically for the lake, the forest, or simply to pass through en route to or from the Småland border.

Why go

Unnaryd is for anyone who wants Halland's quiet, forested inland at its most complete — a lake to swim in or paddle across, woods to walk through, and none of the coastal crowds. It's a long way from the beach resorts and best treated as a deliberate detour rather than a stop on a coastal itinerary: pair it with nearby Hyltebruk for a day exploring Hylte municipality's forest country, or with the Fegen lake area a little further north.

Things to see and do

The lake is the reason to come. Bolmen is one of the larger lakes in this part of Sweden, and its Unnaryd shore has boat launches and quiet stretches of water good for a paddle or a slow row, well away from motorised traffic. The surrounding forest is classic Hylte country — pine and mixed woodland criss-crossed by tracks — and it forms part of the wider network that Hallandsleden, the county's long-distance trail, threads through as it crosses the inland.

There isn't a headline sight beyond the lake and the woods, and the village doesn't pretend otherwise — this is a place to slow down rather than tick off attractions.

Lake and forest nearby

Unnaryd has no sea coast at all — the Kattegatt beaches around Halmstad and Falkenberg are the best part of an hour's drive west, so don't plan on combining a lake visit here with a swim in the sea on the same afternoon. Instead, Lake Bolmen itself provides informal freshwater bathing off the shore, jetties and boat launches rather than a managed beach — bring your own towel. Fegen, another sizeable inland lake, lies a further drive north and offers a similar mix of quiet water and forest shoreline for anyone who wants to see more of Halland's lake country.

Eat and drink

Unnaryd has a small village store and a modest café covering day-to-day needs; don't expect a restaurant scene this far inland. Most visitors either bring their own food for a lakeside picnic or plan meals around Hyltebruk, the nearest town with a proper choice of places to eat. It's classic inland Halland: self-sufficient, low-key, and better suited to a packed lunch than a night out.

Getting there

Unnaryd is reached by road only — there's no railway anywhere nearby, and this is one of the least connected corners of Halland by public transport. A car is close to essential; Hallandstrafiken runs limited bus services through Hylte municipality, but they're built around local needs rather than tourist schedules.
