Horse riding

Beach rides where the rules allow it, forest hacks where they always do — Halland's flat coast and quiet inland tracks suit riders of most levels.

Halland's geography is made for riding: long flat sand, gently rolling inland pasture, and forest bridleways that don't demand technical skill to enjoy. The catch is that beach access for horses is not a blanket right the way it is for walkers — it's set beach by beach, season by season, by the municipality that manages the strand, and the pattern differs from one stretch of coast to the next.

Where to do it in Halland

Long, open beaches such as Haverdal and Ringenäs north of Halmstad, and the twelve-kilometre run of sand at Mellbystrand and Skummeslövsstrand further south, are the kind of shoreline riders picture when they think of a Halland beach hack — wide, firm at the waterline, and long enough for a proper canter. Whether riding is actually permitted on any given day depends on the local rules, which typically ease outside the main bathing season and tighten in summer when the same sand is full of swimmers, sunbathers and small children. Some beaches restrict riding to a fixed strip well above the waterline; others close to horses entirely, usually to protect dune vegetation, ground-nesting birds, or a marked bathing zone. There is no substitute for checking current signage or the relevant kommun's rules before you turn up with a horse — Halmstad, Laholm, Falkenberg and Varberg municipalities each set their own.

Away from the sand, inland Halland offers steadier ground. Riding stables and clubs are scattered through the county's farmland and forest edges near Halmstad, Laholm and Falkenberg, and many maintain their own hacking routes through adjoining woodland and along farm tracks — a lower-stakes, lower-bureaucracy way to ride than chasing a permitted beach window. The forest tracks around Skedala forest and the Simlångsdalen valley also carry bridleways that double as forestry roads, shared with walkers and mountain bikers.

Season and conditions

Beach riding is generally easiest to arrange outside the high summer bathing season — early spring, autumn and winter, when beaches empty of swimmers and the seasonal restrictions that apply in June to August lift or relax. Inland riding through forest and farmland works most of the year, though wet spells turn low-lying tracks to mud and a hard winter freeze makes footing unpredictable. Long summer evenings are the trade-off: less beach access, but the best light and warmest going if you're riding inland instead.

Gear, rentals and schools

Riding schools and stables across the county offer lessons and, at some, hacking or trekking for visiting riders with enough experience to be judged safe off a lead rein — contact a stable directly rather than expecting drop-in hire, since most work by lesson block or booked hack. Bring or hire a properly fitted riding helmet; reputable stables will not put a rider up without one. No licence is required to ride in Halland, but if you plan to bring your own horse and ride a public beach, the municipality's current beach rules are the thing to check, not a generic seasonal rule of thumb — they change beach by beach and can be updated.

Skill level and safety

Flat sand and farm tracks suit riders from confident beginner upward; nothing about Halland's terrain demands advanced skill. The real hazards are shared-space ones: give way to walkers and dogs on beach approach paths, keep beach canters well clear of bathers and sunbathing groups even where riding is technically allowed, and be alert for loose dogs and cyclists on forest bridleways, which in places double as mountain-biking and running routes. Soft, dry upper sand is tougher going and easier to strain a tendon on than the firm strip near the waterline — stick to ground you can see clearly.

Plan it

Base near Halmstad or Laholm for the widest choice of stables and easy beach access at Haverdal, Ringenäs or Mellbystrand. The family beach week itinerary has room to slot in a beach or forest hack alongside its swimming days, and is a reasonable frame for building a riding morning into an otherwise beach-focused trip.
